Studying in Canada as a Mature Student: Key Tips for Success
It may not be uncommon for you to hear that the older you are, the greater the responsibility to prove your motivation for becoming an international student in Canada.
While this can be true, there is no reason for mature students to give up on their Canadian study goals simply because of age. As long as you:
✔ Prepare the right documents,
✔ Choose the right program, and
✔ Prove your financial capability,
You can still study in Canada successfully!
Here are my top tips for mature students:
1. Program, Program, Program
Choose the right program carefully. As a mature student, you likely have extensive professional experience. Your program choice should align with your background.
Two Common Scenarios:
A) No Degree but Lengthy Work Experience
-
If you lack a degree but have years of experience, this strengthens your motivation to study.
-
Consider certificate or diploma programs, which are easier to justify in your study plan.
B) Degree Holder with Professional Experience
-
A certificate may be risky—opt for a diploma with specialization in your field.
-
Postgraduate or master’s degrees are the safest options.
2. Money, Money, Money
Many believe showing more money in your application improves approval chances. Be cautious—this is a double-edged sword.
Key Rules for Proof of Funds (POF):
-
Your funds must align with your income.
-
You cannot show 300KCAD if you only earnm20K/year without a clear explanation.
-
Recommended amount: 1 year of tuition + 1 year of living expenses for you and your family.
3. Sponsorship
The more mature you are, the more careful you should be with sponsors.
-
Sponsors should only be a backup, not your main funding source.
-
You must have your own liquid cash and stable income.
4. Professional Growth Strategy
For families (especially from the Middle East), a common approach is:
-
Husband studies, wife gets an Open Work Permit (OWP).
I recommend the REVERSE:
-
Wife studies, husband gets the OWP.
-
Why? If the wife has been a stay-at-home mom, finding a job on an OWP is extremely difficult.
-
Key Justification: Focus on professional and personal growth through education in your study plan.
Age is not a barrier—proper planning is what matters. Choose wisely, justify your finances, and emphasize career growth in your application.
